Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness is the central tenent of American freedon, democracy and exceptionalism. That, as we now know, explains the unique popularity of Ron Paul, the Libertarian presidential candidate for the Republican nomination.
The idea is that freedom removes the shackles of constraints on personal and political action and behaviour within the limits of the law.
The story of the woman who collapsed after dining at the Heart Attack Grill particularly comes to mind. This is a hospital themed restaurant, where waitresses ("nurses") take orders ("prescriptions") from the customer("patients"). They wrap a tag on the patient's wrist indicating the foods ordered and a "doctor" examines the patients with a stethoscope; It has on it's menu, items named for surgical heart procedures like Single, Double, Triple and Quadruple Bypass burgers (named with the number of meat patties each contains).
They serve all-you-can-eat "Flatliner Fries" cooked in pure Lard. Lard is Pig fat, high in fat concentration. Calorie content of some burgers is upward of 8,000 calories. They are served with regular beer, margaritas, tequila and soft drinks made from pure sugar. Their shakes are made from butter fat cream and flavored.
The restaurant's spokesman is 575-pound Blair River, who died (reportedly, of pneumonia) in March, 2011. He was 29. That may have caused the Arizona location to close in 2011.
This restaurant has the intent of serving "nutritional pornography". The food is "so bad for you it's shocking" - declared the founder.
Customers are aware of these heart attacking menu, but still go there in droves. The restaurant, in a sense, is upfront in slowly killing you.
This is a clear case for Personal responsibility. I believe everyone should have a treat like this once in a while. Yes, I know all you health and nutrition Krazies would like to light me up. Don't forget that this is a free country. Anyone is welcome to "eat their heart out", if they chose. I am not romanticizing over-indulgence, over-consumption, or, even outright gluttony. I am applauding American exceptionalism - Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
At least, the restaurant delivers on promise - Big Thumbs up.
